J.S. Smolian had always had an intense connection to this part of the Gulf Coast. The sugar white sand. The turquoise blue water. He loved the way this place pulled his family together. The magical way it connected them. He loved watching his grandchildren become brilliant beach castle architects. He loved watching his children become themselves again.
In fact, he loved it so much that in 1946, he bought 80 of its acres...mostly undeveloped land, dense with live oaks and scrubby brush, barely navigable but for a couple of dirt paths. J.S. had a vision for the acres. A dream, really. His plan was a summer camp. A destination he could share.
In 1978, J.S. deeded the 80 acres to his grandson, Robert Davis, who shared his grandfather’s dream.
Over 30 years after J.S. first acted on his dream, Robert realized his own. It was the dream we all have for life itself. Simple. Beautiful. Graceful. Elegant.
What is “The Seaside Style”?
If there’s any one unifying element of Seaside style, it is town co-founder Daryl Davis, whose simple, good taste comes naturally and shares easily – from the character of the town itself to the wares sold in its shops. "You could say the style is in the air. It’s hard to define, but you’ll know it when you get there."
The architecture of Seaside extends beyond its roof lines and materials. Beyond its styles. It is the vision of a small town, much like the countless ones dotting the pre-WWII landscape.
Designers describe it as recreating traditional neighborhood of 1920s. "Old way, New town.”
Much like the old world European villages, where a person could stroll anywhere she wanted to go for anything she needed. Where everything is within easy reach.
Where walking(or bicycling) is the most popular pastime.
Where people linger longer in the market to chat. Or stop by front porches for afternoon visits
Seaside boasts pathways inviting you to curl your toes in the sugar sand.
or build masterful castles.
Imagine a day solely dedicated to gazing at blue water colored by vibrant swaths of turquoise.
Part of the magic of Seaside is that it is a town and much more. It is charming and romantic, beautiful and graceful, diverse and ecclectic, authentic and unpretentious, alive and vibrant.

Seaside style portrays a look and comfort of fashionable clothes in natural fabrics that move seamlessly from your weekend bag out to dinner.
It includes the faithful pair of flip-flops that goes with
everything.
FEELING BEACHY
Cover-ups, hats, and swimsuits are also definitely a daily necessity.
STREET STYLE: SIMPLE
Some days call for an outfit that can be thrown on when running out the door 10 minutes late and still feel put together…
While others require knowing style and sophistication.
STRIPES ARE A STAPLE
From cabanas and canopies to beach towels and blouses, a classic stripe never goes out of style….
BAG THE LOOK
I love shoes, belts and jewelry, but there is something special about a great bag.
BANGLES AND BEADS
Simple Silver for everyday pretty,.
CREATE THE ULTIMATE LIVING SPACES
Comfy cushions and plenty of available light ensure this porch will be used day or night.
Decking your living room seating in light fabric is a great way to keep clean. Look for accent paints and fabrics in colors ranging from aqua to deep blue.
Noted as possibly being "the most astonishing design achievement of its era…." these are just a few of the reasons that I'm falling for "The Seaside Style."

DeleteI am so smitten with coastal colors and styles. Azure blue, cerulean blue, Capri blue - what's not to Love! Your pictures of the "Seaside" village and the homes all done in the 1920's "Old way, New town" style are gorgeous. I lived in Florida for a while and I just loved it! Maybe again someday......... Happy fourth of July!
ReplyDeleteMe too, Candy! Blue is my favorite color....and there are so many gorgeous shades to pick from!! ;) I've been to Fla. a handful of times myself!! Love the beaches there!!
DeleteI am so longing to LIVE in all of these pictures. The second picture of that house/building with the porch and bikes made me do a double take -- it looks just like the porch of our favorite coffee shop on St. Simons Island, Georgia (where we hope to retire to some day). For now, we enjoy it for one glorious week each year. Lovely pictures -- saw your post on Anything Blue Friday :)
